Okay, this story irks me... the 7 Kinokuniya bookstores have confirmed that they will no longer carry Megami Magazine, Megami Deluxe, Nyantype, Dengeki Hime, and Dengeki Moeoh magazines due to "inappropriate content."
Apparently, according to reps, the move was "to comply with state regulations and to observe the importer regulations in Japan and the U.S. [for magazines] that could be difficult to carry under the law." and another rep claimed that the magazines "could carry some pictures that could be understood as child porn." WTF!?!
First off, these magazines don't contain child porn, or any kind of explicit content, aside from Dengeki Hime. Dengeki Hime covers ero games in Japan, and does contain nudity and such, of course anything really obscene has mosaic censors as is required by Japanese law. As for Megami, I personally own a couple of these magazines, including one made by a US PUBLISHER, and aside from a bare bottom, there is no nudity to speak of. Sure, some of the pictures are suggestive, but most magazines could be considered "suggestive". And let's get to the bottom of this story, we're talking about imaginary 2-D characters, not some real person.. The new obscenity/CP laws have got everyone with their underwear in a wad. If you were to go by the new laws in the strictest sense possible, nearly every anime/game ever made would have to be pulled due to "child porn". The first live action Superman movie would have to be pulled for "child porn".. And let's not even start with all the magazines/sales papers advertising swimsuits for children... THE HORROR... THE HORROR!!
Don't get me wrong, I'm all for the abolishment of CP and locking up all the sick freaks and all that good stuff, but when it starts spilling over into the creative mainstream and starts hindering obtaining perfectly legal material because people are freaking out that they might get sent to jail over a technicality, then it starts to really irk me.
